Sectioned garage door vs single panel garage door

If you have ever had the responsibility of choosing a garage door, you may not have been aware of the many options that were available to you. Perhaps you only thought the only choice you had was a sectional garage door. However, there is another type of garage door; the sectional garage door. Since you’ll be spending your money on something that is considered an investment, we want to help you make a well-informed decision. At McDonough Garage Door Repair in McDonough, Georgia, we install both sectional and single panel garage doors. One could say that we know a thing or two about garage doors. Both types of garage doors have their advantages and disadvantages. We are going to discuss this with you in greater detail.

Single Panel Garage Doors

This might appeal to you simply because it is a single slab door that is easy to operate. It slides up into the space just above the door. This used to be the more popular options until the sectional door came onto the scene. Even though they take up the same amount of space as the sectional garage door, they operate a little differently.

The single garage door is not hung-over tracks above the door, rather they are hung onto a hinge, which is on mounted onto the jamb. When it has been fitted with door springs, the door can swing even without a garage door opener. Sometimes, a single panel door is hung using a similar method as the sectional garage door. This allows it to be attached to your garage door opener.

Advantages and Disadvantages

While there are some advantages to the single door, there are some people who just prefer a sectional door. Some are used as a retrofit door so they can easily use their existing hardware. However, if you are considering starting from the from the ground up, you might want to consider the following about a single panel garage door:

  • Pricing – The single panel garage door is a lot less expensive than a sectional garage door. When things that are attached to your garage door, such as cables, torsion springs and garage door opener, you’ll find the cost of these things are also less expensive. They are easier to install than the sectional garage door with fewer moving parts. You save far more with a single garage door than with a sectional garage door.
  • Design – it is true that a sectional garage door offers far more options. However, they do not always operate in two-foot space. If you’re trying to match panels, you might end up with a door that doesn’t look very attractive. On the other hand, the single panel door is only a giant slab. It comes in a variety of materials and don’t have to worry about panels that fit or don’t fit. What you see is basically what you get.
  • Simple – Unfortunately, the sectional garage door comes with a lot of small parts and pieces. This makes it very hard for a do-it-yourselfer to properly install this type of door. That is why they often call on our service technicians when they want a sectional garage door installed.  Single panel doors don’t have all the pieces to deal with, which is one of the things that make it most appealing to those who have them installed. Along with fewer parts, there is also less maintenance.

We don’t want to paint the picture that we prefer one over another. Our job is to simply present you with the advantages and disadvantages. Here are some of the reasons why the single garage door is not a favorite for most homeowners today.

  • Safety – One of the main things that homeowners prefer a sectional door to a single garage door is because of the safety features. The single door has extension springs. This type of spring has been known to cause all sorts of problems. People have even lost their lives because of them. This is because the springs are not contained when they snap or break. They are very destructive because of the lack of a safety feature.
  • Limited Space – Since newer homes don’t really allow for much space between your home and your neighbors, the driveway space is limited. This means that when you pull into your garage, you will likely have to park further back so that you can fit your car inside your garage door. When space is very tight, having a sectional garage door is probably the best option for you.
  • Weather Resistant – While a single garage door can withstand some extreme weather, a sectional garage door is able to withstand even more. When something happens to a single panel door, the entire door will be affected. However, when the weather affects a sectional garage door, it only affects a portion of the door, not the entire door. When a sectional door is dented, it will only be dented on one section. This means the repairs will be less expensive.

If you’re in the market for a new garage door, you have some serious decisions to make. The first one would be, which style of garage door you will choose, sectional or single garage door? This means that you’ll have to consider the advantages and disadvantages. If you are the type who insist on installing your own garage door, you’ll want to go with the garage door that is easiest to install, the single panel garage door. Even then, we would still encourage you to get the help of a qualified professional garage door service. We would certainly recommend this if you were to have a sectional garage door install. There is far too much that goes into getting this type of door properly installed. If you leave out one thing, it could set you back drastically. Don’t be too proud to ask for help from the experts and avoid a garage door installation nightmare.
